Lenz grew up in a working-class family in Langenthal. His father, a textile worker, and his mother, a homemaker, watched a restless child with difficulties adapting to school grow up. At the age of 16, he left school to start an apprenticeship as a mason.

The discovery of literature came during his adolescence, when he immersed himself in reading novels and short stories. Fascinated by narrative power, Lenz decided to become a writer, choosing a self-taught path, emphasizing learning through reading and writing rather than university.

In 1998, Lenz published his first novel, « Primitivo ». The story depicts the daily life of a young mason working on a construction site in Berne. The novel was critically and publicly successful, propelling the writer’s career.
